Frosted

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Almost every winter, in Condon, there’s a bout of freezing fog. It’s like having snow, without the bad roads. The fog comes in and freezes  thick on everything. The trees get a flocking, all the dry grasses turn white and fat, barbed wire softens.  It’s beautiful.

Bill and I went walking Christmas morning. The freezing fog turned me grey. When we walked the day before, it was sunny and I regretted not having my sunglasses. This time I had them. Just in case. Maybe they kept my eyes from turning frosty.

Walking in the cold like that is a giddy kind of challenge. It woke me up and my face hurt and, when I took off my gloves to snap a picture, my hands got so cold I didn’t think I’d get them warm again. I wondered if we were a little bit stupid, going out in it. No one else was out, it being Christmas morning, it being crazy cold. But we did our full walk, up by the golf course, the old granary, past the fairgrounds and the cemetery, to the airport, then back by way of the new granaries.

Walking around Condon always makes me want to write. It’s that kind of place.

Waiting

When I was a kid, the three or four days before Christmas Eve were the longest days in the world. Time got fat and slow and sluggy. How would I ever stand the days, the hours, before it was here?

Usually we were out of school by then and driving Mom batty. Between the five of us kid, there was plenty of bickering to go around. Mom would be getting ready and in a high pitch of making things perfect. Nana and Granddad, Aunt Lena, Aunt Pearl and her boys, and Uncle Lee were all coming for dinner and “The Tree.” We tried to help, we really did. (more…)

My First Time

I’m excited about my new website! I’m also very appreciative of Julia Stoops and Jimmy Thomas at Blue Mouse Monkey for the design. Julia made the whole experience easy and I love the results. And thanks to Jason Sass for taking my picture. Well, for taking a whole bunch of pictures and having a long discussion with me about why he didn’t like the one I liked, and why I didn’t like the one he liked. And so on. Also, to the friends who encouraged me and helped me with some of the details (you know who you are), thank you.

I love writing. I like sharing my writing and news about things that happen with my writing and good news about the other writers I know (or would like to). This will be a place to do that. I also like talking about writing and the writing life, reading events, about the books I’ve read, movies or plays I’ve seen, and any other thing that falls in the category of creativity and storytelling. Which leaves things wide open. Because aren’t we all always telling some kind of story–our own story–in the way we dress, the way we make our homes, the things we choose for entertainment, what we talk about or are silent about, in our politics, the work we do, who we fall in love with, the food we eat?

So this will be a place to talk about all that. I’d like it to be a conversation…one of my favorite things. So if something I say sparks something in you…jump in. And I’ll do the same.
